August 2008 Hello SSPHC members,

August 2008 The Bleckley County 4H Royal Riders Honor the SSPHC
April 2008 Young People + Peruvian Horses Fun, excitement, and a positive outlook for the future.
Southern States Peruvian Horse Club members, Angel & Andrea Rodriguez, Rancho Loma Linda and Jack, Edna, & Kristi Miller, Krisna Farm, in cooperation with the Bleckley County, GA Royal Riders 4H Horse Group, have instituted a program to educate interested 4H members on proper equitation, gait, conformation, and history of the Peruvian Horse. The SSPHC Members attended the 4H groups April 1, 2008 monthly meeting to present the program and solicit 4H members that would be interested. The response was astonishing! Nine members of the 4H group, ranging in age from 8 years old to 16 years old, with various levels of experience, signed up for the program. Our first get together with our new charges, was to evaluate each participants abilities and dedication to their new endeavor. The nine young people where divided into two groups so that we could focus on each individuals instruction effectively and to be able to match each participant with an appropriate mount. After four sessions with each group, their progress is amazing. A few of the members are working with bozal horses while others are working in bit, all focusing on proper equitation and gait, and working to improve their skills. Each rider is required to groom, tack, and prepare their mount and after the session, attend to their horses cool-down. The riders will have an opportunity to display their skills at the Dixie Plantation All Breed Show, at Canterbury Equestrian Showplace, Newbury, FL, 21 June 2008. Classes will include Peruvian Performance, Peruvian Gait, Peruvian Pleasure, and a Championship Peruvian Open. Please check back to read more about their progress. UPDATE May 21,2008 After a month and a half we have 5 dedicated young people continuing in the program. We have had some drop-outs due to various reasons ,as young people's interest change, but our remaining charges have focused on improving their skills and are looking forward to participating in the Open Show in June. All riders have been matched with an appropriate Peruvian Horse and are working together with their mounts to become individual teams. It's amazing to see how these young people and their assigned horse work together. It took some re-assigning and moving around to get teams that "clicked", but now we are honing our skills and moving forward. A special thank you to Gloria Grant of Casa de Gloria, Melrose, Florida whom provided special attention and prizes for the young riders, and of course the Southern States Peruvian Horse Club Members and Bleckley County 4H Group Director, Tammi McGraw for coming out to support the riders and the Peruvian Horse. We are extremely proud of the sportsmanship, dedication, and courtesy displayed by our young group. The Bleckley County, GA.
